Roger Hitchings, BSc(Hons), PGCE(FE), IOTA AccreditedI am employed by the Organic Research Centre, Elm Farm and I specialise in advice and training in organic horticulture including vegetables, protected cropping, fruit, composting, soil management & fertility, and technical conversion planning. I joined the Organic Advisory Service in 1998 and I am now Head of Advisory Services at the Organic Research Centre – Elm Farm. Much of my time at present is being taken with planning the new OCIS due for launch in 2008 – I also represent ORC at Organic Centre Wales. I have been involved in a wide range of projects covering England, Wales, EU member states and Israel alongside the delivery of around 900 visits to growers and sometimes farmers.
I have over 20 years of direct experience in the organic sector including 7 years of commercial horticultural crop production and I have written and delivered organic courses at a range of levels including FE. I have an extensive knowledge of all aspects of horticultural production, organic standards and related research and development. I am a member of the Advisory Committee on Organic Standards (ACOS) and chair of its Technical Committee. I have been a committee member of the Organic Growers Alliance since its launch and I was the last chair of the Organic Growers Association.
