Phil SumptionPhil Sumption has had more than 20 years of experience in the organic horticultural sector as a grower, researcher and advisor. After working on a number of different farms and projects he was the organic grower at Radford Mill farm in Somerset from 1989-1996. After 2 years doing VSO, working for an agricultural department in Southern Lao PDR he joined HDRA. Since 1999 he has worked as a researcher at HDRA (now Garden Organic) on the agronomics of conversion, innovations in organic vegetable production, weed management, vegetable variety evaluation and plant breeding. He has also undertaken conversion advisory visits for the Organic Conversion Information Service (OCIS) through the Organic Advisory Service and is now also an adviser for the Local Food programme. In 2004 he resumed growing part-time and converted the walled kitchen garden at Cotesbach, South Leicestershire, to organic production for supply to Naturally Good Food and Lutterworth farmers market. He is on the committee of the Mercia Organic Producers - an informal group that meets 6 times per year and covers the East and West Midlands.
